The Toilet; A Buyer's Guide

The Toilet; A Buyer's Guide

The humble toilet is a staple item in many homes around the world. When they first come to mind they may seem like simple fixtures that don’t need much thought when it comes to buying one. But that is where you are mistaken. As soon as you enter the process of procuring this throne of sorts, you will be met with what seems like an infinite number of options. However, fear not for Crossling have put together this buyer’s guide to help you buy the perfect toilet for you and your bathroom!

Let’s begin with some pretty useless but possibly interesting history as to how the toilet came to be…

There is evidence of simplistic forms of toilets dating back thousands of years, such as those by the Scots and the Greeks who are most widely recognised for inventing the first toilets, dating back to 3000 BC and 1700 BC respectively. However, the first ever flush toilet was invented many years later by Sir John Harrington in the 1500’s. His invention comprised of a cistern and a downpipe where water would flush waste down. Nevertheless, despite the prevalence of disease at the time, due to poor human waste disposal that led to polluted water, his invention was forgot about for 200 years! Clearly it was, thankfully for us, eventually remembered as more modern versions are now a staple feature in UK bathrooms and in many other bathrooms around the world.

Moving forward to the much more technical and hygienic toilets available to you today…

At Crossling we stock a huge range of toilets of various types, styles and prices. Therefore, you are sure to find one perfect for you once you know what you’re after. Here are the 4 main types we stock.

The Close Coupled.

Close Coupled Toilet

The close coupled toilet is the most popular style of toilet. Not only is this because they are available in a huge range of styles, making it simple to find one that complements your bathroom, they are also easy to install and maintain. This is due to the cistern being located directly on the back of the toilet pan and thus offers easy access for repairs.

The Back to Wall

The main benefit to these toilets is that they fit flush to the wall so there is no gap around the back. This is greatly beneficial when it comes to cleaning as there are no hard to reach floor spaces. They also offer a clean and tidy finish as the cistern and pipework are hidden away in a unit or the wall. This again means less cleaning. This style of toilet is a great option if you want to achieve a modern style of bathroom.

Back to Wall Toilet

The Wall Hung

Wall hung toilets give the impression of it floating above the ground. As they have a concealed cistern, are flush against the wall and don’t touch the floor, they make bathroom cleaning as easy as it gets. This toilet complements a contemporary bathroom perfectly and, furthermore, takes up minimal room so it is great at creating more space in a small bathroom.

Low and High Leveled

Low and high level toilets are the ideal choice if you are wanting to implement a traditional look to the room. For these toilets, the cistern is fitted to the wall and connected to the toilet pan by a flush pipe. Low level loos have their cistern fitted at a low level and a high level loo has its cistern fitted at a high level. It is important to note for these loos that they need to be fitted to either a solid or reinforced wall.

If you have a large space to work with then most of these options will work well, it’s all down to your personal preference of style and installation ease that would make one better than the other. On the other hand, if you have a smaller space a wall hung or back to wall loo will benefit you greatly when it comes to using as little space as possible. All these choices can be personalised ever further to your taste. From style and colour of loo seat or flush to water saving technology, you can create a toilet completely unique.
