Push-fit Vs Press-fit: Which One is Better?

Push-fit vs Press-fit: which one is best for you?

It is easy to register how the advancement of modern technology has made our livelihood more convenient and efficient when considering every day items, such as your smartphone or computer you are reading this from. However, have you ever considered just how yours’ and your contractor’s lives have been made easier and more cost-efficient when installing new technology, you might now take for granted? The plumbing and pipeline industry has experienced waves of new technological offerings. They ensure your house, office and school can safely provide you tap water, drain your bath, and heat your room without the premium costs and potential hazardousness nature associated with the traditional heat and soldering.

Press-fit

Beginning in the 1950s, press-fit was the first mass method for connecting pipelines without the need for heating and soldering into a smooth, clean, easy-to-do installation. Still utilising strong metal pipeline material, a compression nut is threaded into the body of the fitting and then tightened to enforce a leak-proof connection.

Press-fit are easily installed with simple tools but can require re-tightening to prevent slow leaks that may develop over time.

Push-fit

The more recent method, developed in the 1980s, push-fit makes installation even more convenient. Like press-fit, there are no heat and soldering processes is involved. Unlike press-fit, the requirement of tools to install is also no longer involved. Simply push the pipeline into the fitment until you hear a click, and voila! An O-ring seals the connection and a grip ring holds onto the pipe. Labour time is massively reduced and the ability to work in confined spaces is massively improved using this method. Plastic material is typically used for push-fit, which has the reputation of being not as sturdy as metal fitments, but is still widely considered as a reliable solution. Some brands such as Polypipe, now produce and supply push-fit products that offer the user-friendly experience but provide the same reliability as other fitment methods.
