How can you know if you need a new boiler? Any funny noises or constantly needing repairs is a good sign that your boiler is ready for boiler heaven. Nonetheless, even if your boiler seems to be plodding on happily enough, if it is more than 10 years old it is probably not running very efficiently and costing you more money than necessary. Furthermore, it will be at risk of a sudden breakdown! If one of these situations applies to you and you’re ready to make this investment for your home, the North of England has some great, experienced and talented plumbers to fit your new boiler for you. However, boilers are not a fixture one should have installed and then forget about. That is why we have put together Crosslings’ top tips to ensure you’re new boiler gives you maximum return on investment!

  • Get your boiler serviced once a year by a specialist

Boilers go through a lot in their lifetime which is why we recommend you give it a bit of TLC and get a professional in to service it at least once a year to ensure it is running efficiently.

  • Bleed your radiators

Have you ever noticed part of your radiator is toasty warm whilst another section is ice cold? This is most likely to be due to trapped air. When your radiators are working inefficiently like this, one of the downfalls is that your boiler is having to pick up the slack and work harder. By bleeding your radiators to fix this issue, you will make a big difference to your heating systems efficiency at keeping your home nice and warm.

  • Like people do in this covid world we are living in – your boiler also needs distancing!

Boilers need good ventilation in order to run smoothly so make sure it has plenty of space and nothing is blocking the vents or external flues. If your boiler is in a cupboard, make sure clutter doesn’t accumulate around it.

  • Check the pressure gauge

A pressure between 1 and 2 bars is what you are after. If it is below 1 then your boiler is in need of repressurisation.

  • Don’t let your condensate pipes freeze

We have had quite a chilly/thought for a second I lived in the arctic - start to 2021. These conditions when it gets below zero risks your condensate pipes freezing. To prevent this, make sure these pipes are well insulated.

  • Turn on your boiler at least once a month

Although in tip 4 we accept the sad reality that we don’t live in a county with the climate of Dubai… we do get a summer here in the UK; however fleeting it may be. Although you may think keeping your boiler and heating system turned off during this time is the best thing to do, as you don’t need any additional heat, your boiler will thank you for at least a 15 minute run time once a month to keep the pump clear of grit and prevent it from breaking down.

  • Take advantage of our wonderful Northern plumbers

As mentioned above, we recommend you get a professional to service your boiler at least once a year. But when we say this, we don’t mean once a year and that’s it! Boilers are a high tech piece of heating kit so it’s best not to try fix a problem yourself. For instance, if your boiler allows you to see the flame, this flame should always be blue. If its yellow or orange, something is wrong. Please get a professional to look at it as soon as possible rather than tinkering with it yourself.

  • Get a carbon monoxide detector

Carbon monoxide is a lethal gas that is produced when fuel is incompletely burned. A carbon monoxide detector is an invaluable bit of safety kit for your home. It should be placed approximately a meter away from your boiler to help detect any carbon monoxide leakages and keep yourself and your loved ones safe. We recommend you regularly test the alarm on the detector. Click here to view the carbon monoxide detectors we have in stock.
